FACULTY OF SCIENCE

FOUR-YEAR BMSc HONORS BIOCHEMISTRY

Admission Requirements

Completion of the BMSc requirements for years 1 and 2 (Faculty of Science) plus year 3 of the BMSc Honors or General program, or the requirements for the 3 year BSc in Biochemistry and Chemistry, Chemistry, or Biology. The 3 year BSc in Biology must include a full course or equivalent in year 2 Organic Chemistry.

Entry requires an overall average of 70% in the last two years, and an average of at least 70% in the five senior Biology, Medical Sciences and/or Chemistry courses, with no mark less than 60% in those five (see BIOLOGY PROGRAMS (Pointer) and CHEMISTRY (Pointer).) The 3-year program must include the following, with a mark of 70% in each case:

Chemistry 213a/b plus 223b, or 253

Biochemistry 280a, 380b, 381a, and 382b (formerly Biology 280a, 380b, 381a and 382b)

Notes:

  1. Chemistry 224a/234b, or 254 is recommended, but does not require a minimum mark of 70%
  2. A 1.0 or 0.5 course in Statistics is required; normally taken in the second year.

It is recommended that students take the prerequisites in the following order together with the other courses required in their specific programs:

Second year

Biochemistry 280a (formerly Biology 280a)

Chemistry 213a/b and 223b, or 253

Chemistry 224a and 234b, or 254 (recommended for students in Biology or the BMSc, but required for students in Biochemistry and Chemistry, and in Chemistry)

Third year

Biochemistry 380b, 381a, and 382b (formerly Biology 380b, 381a and 382b).

The Department of Biochemistry should be consulted by all applicants.

Fourth Year

Principal Courses

Biochemistry 483 or 484 (enrolment in Biochemistry 483 is limited) (1.5 credits).
Any five of: Biochemistry 400a, 410a, 420b, 430b, 440a, 445a/b, 450b, 463b, 465a, Microbiology and Immunology 467b

Subsidiary Courses

One course from Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or Medical Sciences at the 300- or 400-level with the approval of the Department.

Note:

If it has not been taken previously, a half-course in statistics (e.g., Statistical Sciences 222a/b) must be included as one of the above subsidiary courses.
