FACULTY OF SCIENCE

THREE-YEAR BSc IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND CHEMISTRY

This program provides the student with a fundamental background in both Biochemistry and Chemistry. The program is designed for those students interested in the molecular aspects of biology and/or the biological aspects of chemistry. Students may qualify for the third year of the honors program if they have met the admissions standards of the honors program.

Students completing the 3-year BSc in Biochemistry and Chemistry may be admitted into the fourth year of the Honors Biochemistry program if admission requirements are met, but direct admission to the fourth year of the Honors Chemistry program is not possible.

Admission Requirements

A first year program that includes Chemistry 020 with a minimum mark of 60%, or 023, with a minimum mark of 70%; Biology 022 or 023 with a minimum mark of 60%; Mathematics 030, with a minimum mark of 80%, or Calculus 050a/b plus one of 051a/b or 081a/b, or Applied Mathematics 026; Physics 020, 022, 024 or 025.

Second Year

Chemistry 251, 253, and 254
Biochemistry 280a (formerly Biology 280a) plus one other 200-level Biology or Medical Sciences half course (see Biology course list) (except Pathology 240a). Students wishing to retain the option of entering the third year of the Honors Biochemistry and Chemistry program must select Biology 281b as the second half course.
One option

Note: Students wishing to retain the option of entering the third year of the Honors Chemistry program must include Applied Mathematics 290a or the former Applied Mathematics 281a.

Third Year

Chemistry 322

Two of Chemistry 321b, 323a, 324a, 378b
Two Biology or Medical Sciences half-courses at the 200- or 300-level (except Pathology 240a, 440a/b, Anatomy and Cell Biology 329b, Biochemistry 385a, 386b, Epidemiology and Biostatistics 330b, or Medical Sciences 400). Students wishing to retain the option of entering the Honors Biochemistry program must select Biochemistry 380b (formerly Biology 380b) as one of the two Biology or Medical Sciences (see above) half courses.
One option

The Area of Concentration will consist of the 8.0 senior-level Biology or Medical Sciences (see above for exceptions) and/or Chemistry courses which are specified in the second and third years.
