MAJOR IN MEDICAL SCIENCES


Admission Requirements

Completion of first-year requirements, including Biology 022 or 023 and Chemistry 020 or 023 with a mark of at least 60% in these principal courses.


Module

6.0 courses:

0.5 course: Biochemistry 280a
1.0 course from: Chemistry 213a/b and either Chemistry 223b or a 0.5 course in Chemistry at the 200 level, or Chemistry 273a and 283G, or the former Chemistry 253.
0.5 course from: Biology 244a/b, Statistical Sciences 222a/b
1.0 course from: Biology 281b, 282b, 290F/G
3.0 courses*, at least 1.0 of which must be at the 400 level, from: Anatomy and Cell Biology 309, 319, 429a or the former 329b, Biochemistry 381a, 382b, 385a, 386b, 410a, 420b, Epidemiology and Biostatistics 330b, Medical Biophysics 302E, 303E, 330F, 331G, Microbiology and Immunology 220a, 221a/b, 357a, 360b, 361G, 461b, 465a, 467b, 473a, the former 450b, Pathology 240a, 440a/b, Pharmacology and Toxicology 206a/b, 355a/b, 356a/b, 443a/b, 454a/b, 460a/b, 466a/b, Physiology 312 or the former 310, 314a.

* These 3.0 courses from the Medical Science Disciplines (see definition above), must be selected as follows: a minimum of 1.5 courses taken from one Discipline and a minimum of 1.0 from a second Discipline. The remaining 0.5 may be taken from any of the Disciplines.

If courses in the major in Medical Sciences are included in another major in the Biological or Medical Sciences, also being taken by a student, then the courses which overlap must be replaced by courses at the 200-level or above from the Medical Sciences, following approval by the BMSc Counsellor and the Department of the other Major.

Students are advised to consult with the BMSc counsellor prior to selecting 300- and 400-level courses to ensure that appropriate prerequisite courses have been selected.
