Family Studies 020, Introduction to Family Studies
Description: A multi-disciplinary approach to the family as a biological, social, economic, legal and political unit, continually changing and adapting to a variety of pressures. This course provides students with a broad grounding in the family in the current Canadian context, and examines cultural and historical variation.

Family Studies 200E, Current Issues in Family Studies
Description: This course focuses on current issues involving the family. The first segment explores methodology used by researchers to ask questions about families and analyze changes. The second segment examines in depth several topics that currently impact on families, including functions, stresses and changes. Emphasis will be on families in Canada, with some comparative work.
Prerequisite(s): Family Studies 020 or permission of instructor.

Description: Students will be introduced to the major theoretical frameworks used bysocial scientists to explain variation in family life including life span, life course, developmental, social learning, social exchange, social conflict, symbolic interactionist, ecological, family systems and feminist theory perspectives.

Description: Diversity in culture of origin and family form lead to diversity in parenting and child care in Canada. The course examines the differing expectations of children, and parents and teachers across cultures, migration and settlement experience, related family resources and government policies.

Description: This course examines the social forces that shape life choices for women in Canada. Particular attention is given to the influence of the increased opportunity for formal education and the emerging choices each generation of North American women encounter with regard to career, marriage, motherhood, and family life.
