FACULTY OF SCIENCE

THREE-YEAR BSc CHEMISTRY AND GEOLOGY

This program is designed to provide the student with a basic background in both Chemistry and Earth Sciences. This program is advantageous for those interested in environmental studies.

Students may qualify for admission to the fourth year honors program in Geology, provided that a 70% average has been obtained in five senior Earth Sciences courses, with no mark less than 60% in those courses.

Admission Requirements

A first year program that includes Chemistry 020 with a minimum mark of 60%, or 023, with a minimum mark of 70%; Earth Sciences 020 or equivalent (see note) with a minimum mark of 60%; Mathematics 030, with a minimum mark of 80%, or Calculus 050a/b plus one of 051a/b or 081a/b, or Applied Mathematics 026. Physics 020, 022, 024 or 025.

Note: Courses equivalent to Earth Sciences 020 are any two of Earth Sciences 081a/b, 082a/b, 083F, 085a/b; the recommended combination most closely approximating the content of Earth Sciences 020 is Earth Sciences 082a/b and 085a/b

Second Year

Chemistry 251, 253*
Earth Sciences 200a; 205a, 206b, or the former Earth Sciences 210; Earth Sciences 230b
One senior half-course option from Chemistry or Earth Sciences
A half-course option elected to attain a total of five courses. Students wishing to retain the option of entering third year Chemistry should take Chemistry 254. Earth Sciences 260a/b is recommended to those choosing an Earth Sciences option.
*In this program only, Chemistry 213a/b plus 223b may be substituted for Chemistry 253.

Note: Students who do not meet the course requirements may be allowed to proceed into the third year of the program only with the special permission of both departments.

Third Year

Chemistry 254 if not previously taken
Chemistry 322
Earth Sciences 312a and 314b, or the former Earth Sciences 311,
Earth Sciences 310a/b, 341a/b
A senior half-course from Earth Sciences or Chemistry, not including Chemistry 390a or Earth Sciences 390a/b/y. Earth Sciences 250y is strongly recommended to those who choose an Earth Sciences option.
Sufficient options to attain a total of five courses

Note: Students should choose their senior Science options carefully, in consultation with both departments, in order to retain the possibility of transferring from this program to the third year of either Chemistry or Earth Sciences programs, or to the fourth year of an Honors BSc program in the Earth Sciences. Students must have their course selection approved by each department.

The Area of Concentration will consist of the 9.0 senior-level Chemistry and Earth Sciences courses which are specified in second and third year.
