As a major player on the international academic scene, The University of Western Ontario has developed over 70 formal exchange and cooperation agreements with universities and other centres of higher learning around the world. These exchange programs allow Western students to live in other cultures while studying at prestigious institutions. Students are given a unique opportunity to gain entry to competitive foreign institutions, usually at fee schedules that are significantly lower than those available to independent foreign students.
Western students who attend a foreign institution in an exchange program register at Western and pay the usual tuition and incidental fees to Western for the semester(s) spent abroad. In some programs, scholarships or partial stipends may be available to specially qualified students.
Application deadlines vary. In most cases, it is advisable to start making inquiries at least one full year to 18 months before the commencement of the study abroad period.
Before students embark on any exchange opportunity, it is their responsibility to confirm that the courses taken at the foreign institution will be accepted for credit toward their Western degrees. Approvals may be required from the student's departmental counsellor and the Dean of their Faculty.
There are additional requirements for outgoing exchange students that must be complied with. Failure to meet these requirements may result in cancellation of the student's exchange or study abroad program.
