HONORS PROGRAMS

Registration in a specific honors program usually begins in the second year, but admission may be gained in the third or fourth year. Students intending to proceed to a 4-year degree should consider the degree requirements when selecting courses in first, second and third years. In all years of all honors programs, students should consult the Department concerned about the choice of optional courses. Four-year honors degree programs are composed of not fewer than twenty courses. Students admitted with advanced standing to an honors program are required to complete a minimum of ten courses offered by the University or one of the affiliated colleges.

For admission to an honors program a student must earn a mark of at least 60% in each course listed as a principal course by the Department(s) of specialization, an average for those courses of at least 70% and a passing grade in each course listed as a subsidiary course. The student must also meet all departmental requirements.

A student earning at least 60% in each principal course, an average for those courses of 65-69% and a passing grade in each subsidiary course may be accepted by special permission of the Department(s) concerned.

For progression to the next year of an honors program a student must in the current year earn a mark of at least 60% in each course listed as a principal course by the Department(s) of specialization, an average for those courses of at least 70%, a passing grade in each course listed as a subsidiary course and, if more than one subsidiary course was taken, an average for them of at least 60%.

A student earning a mark of at least 60% in each principal course, an average for those courses of 65-69%, a passing grade in each subsidiary course and, if more than one subsidiary course was taken, an average for them of at least 60%, may be permitted to progress by special permission of the Department(s) concerned.

Students who fail to meet the progression requirements in an honors program but who are eligible to continue in a 3-year program may transfer to such a program but must satisfy all the requirements of that program prior to graduation.

To graduate with an honors degree, a student must in fourth year complete each course listed as a principal course by the Department(s) of specialization with a mark of at least 60%, an average for those courses of at least 70%, a passing grade in each course listed as a subsidiary course and, if more than one subsidiary course was taken, an average for them of at least 60%.

In exceptional circumstances, a student who earns a minimum cumulative average of 68%, with a minimum mark of 60% in each principal course and a passing grade in each subsidiary course, may be permitted to graduate with an honors degree by special permission of the Dean on the recommendation of the Department concerned.

Students who pass all courses in the fourth year of an honors program for the degree of BA or BSc and satisfy all other graduation requirements, but fail to qualify for an honors degree, must consult the Dean of their Faculty regarding alternative graduation possibilities.
