Media and the Public Interest 390F/G, Social Movements and Communicative Practice
Description: An introduction to the relation of social movements, new and old, to communication systems and media practices. Students investigate how social movements use media to communicate with their own members and relay concerns to a wider public, and the interaction between social movements and media institutions.
Prerequisite(s): Registration in the third or fourth year of a Major or Honors Specialization in Media and the Public Interest, or Media, Information and Technoculture, or permission of the Faculty.

Media and the Public Interest 391F/G, Alternative Media
Description: This course examines the definition, history, theory and practice of “alternative” media, and its differences from and relationship to “mainstream” corporate and state supported media. These issues are explored across a variety of media to critically assess the possibilities and limits of alternative media in enriching cultural diversity and democratic practice.
Prerequisite(s): Registration in the third or fourth year of a Major or Honors Specialization in Media and the Public Interest, or Media, Information and Technoculture, or permission of the Faculty.

Media and the Public Interest 490F/G, Media in the Public Interest Practicum
Description: This course combines work in the field of public interest media, participation in a special seminar and theoretically informed paper or project based on the practicum experience.
Prerequisite(s): Limited to students in the fourth year of a Major or Honors Specialization in Media and the Public Interest.
A maximum of 15 hours of class time and a minimum of forty hours placement, 0.5 course.
