UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES IN SOCIAL SCIENCE

FIRST YEAR

The first year program in the social sciences is intended to lead to modules offered by departments within the Faculty of Social Science. However, it also affords admission to modules in the faculties of Arts and Humanities or Science provided that the prerequisites for upper year courses are satisfactorily met. Similarly, students who have successfully completed a first year program in Arts or in Science are eligible to enroll in Social Science modules in subsequent years.

MODULE COMBINATIONS In addition to the essential modules noted under each degree type, additional modules may be added as specified in the Module Combinations Chart. Modules from different departments including modules from different Faculties may be combined. Check the module listings under other Faculties. If there is overlap between modules, consult the Faculties concerned to determine whether or not the modules may be combined and, if so, how the overlap may be resolved.

LANGUAGE SKILLS English is the language of instruction in most courses. Students whose command of English is inadequate are asked to seek advice from the Dean's Office about remedial instruction in English.

Because of the bilingual nature of Canadian society as well as for cultural and academic reasons, it is important that social science students have some command of French. Which courses are most appropriate to achieve this objective will depend upon the student's background and should be worked out in consultation with the Department of French.

Some graduate programs at this and other universities require a degree of competence in at least one language other than English, and some require proficiency in two. Students who may wish eventually to enter a graduate program should prepare themselves to meet such language requirements in their undergraduate work.

MATHEMATICS, STATISTICS, COMPUTER SCIENCE

Students in most branches of Social Science benefit from courses in mathematics, statistics and computer science. Courses in statistics and quantitative methods are taught by several departments in the Faculty of Social Science. In addition, the Faculty of Science offers the following courses of particular interest to Social Science students:

Note: Because these Science courses may be antirequisite to the courses required in some Social Science programs, students should consult the requirements for their programs before selecting mathematics or computer science courses.
