SOCIOLOGY (includes Criminology and Population Studies)
Overlapping Courses Between Sociology Modules Students who take two separate majors or a major and a specialization offered by the Department of Sociology (e.g., a Major in Sociology and a Major in Criminology) may overlap 1.0 course: Sociology 205a/b Statistics for Sociology and Sociology 206a/b Research Methods in Sociology (or the former Sociology 231) to fulfill the statistics and methodology requirements for both majors. Sociology 240E Survey or Sociological Theory or Sociology 270a/b Foundations of Social Theory and Sociology 271a/b Survey of Contemporary Theory, however, will be counted as fulfilling the requirements of one of these two modules; for the other major or specialization, students must take an additional Sociology course at the 200-level. The Department does not recognize any course overlaps between a minor and another module, other than Sociology, (e.g., Honors Specialization in Sociology and Minor in Criminology). The Department will allow students to substitute certain statistics courses (see list below) taken from other departments for Sociology 205a/b and 206a/b. Students are required to complete an equivalent number of Sociology courses at the 200-level to replace Sociology 205a/b and 206a/b, i.e., if Sociology 205a/b is replaced, then an additional 0.5 Sociology course at the 200-level is required; if both Sociology 205a/b and 206a/b are replaced, than an additional 1.0 Sociology course at the 200-level is required.
Three-Year Bachelor degrees allow a maximum of 9.0 courses in one subject area. Some modular combinations when taken exclusively through the Department of Sociology, may exceed this maximum, e.g., Major in Sociology + Minor in Criminology. Please consult the Department for further information.
