Physiology 020, Human Physiology
Description: A survey course outlining the principles of human/mammalian physiology; general properties of the living cell and the internal environment; neural, muscle, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine systems; metabolism, reproduction and homeostasis.
Antirequisite(s): Physiology 021, 130, 312 (or the former Physiology 310).
Prerequisite(s): Grade 12U (SBI4U) Biology and Grade 12U (SCH4U) Chemistry, or their equivalent. First year courses in Biology and Chemistry are recommended.
Limited to students enrolled in the Nursing program.

Physiology 021, Introduction to Human Physiology
Description: An introductory course, outlining the principles of human/mammalian physiology along with a general survey of various physiological systems (e.g. cardiovascular, renal, neural, motor, gastrointestinal, endocrine, respiratory, etc.).
Antirequisite(s): Physiology 020, 130, 312 (or the former Physiology 310).
Prerequisite(s): Grade 12U Biology or its equivalent. Grade 12U Chemistry is recommended.
Limited to students enrolled in first year Kinesiology.

Physiology 130, Human Physiology
Description: A survey course outlining the principles of human/mammalian physiology: general properties of the living cell and internal environment; neural, muscle, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, renal and endocrine system; metabolism, reproduction, and homeostasis.
Antirequisite(s): Physiology 020, 021, 312 (or the former Physiology 310).
Prerequisite(s): Grade 12U (SBI4U) Biology, and Grade 12U (SCH4U) Chemistry or their equivalent. First year courses in Biology and Chemistry are recommended.

Physiology 312, Mammalian Physiology
Description: A survey of the physiology of various systems (e.g. neural, endocrine, renal, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, etc.) of the mammal.
Antirequisite(s): The former Physiology 310.
Prerequisite(s): Physics 020, 024, 028a/b and 029b, or the former 022 or 025; 1.0 course from Mathematics 030, Calculus 050 a/b, Calculus 051a/b, 081a/b, 091b, Linear Algebra 040a/b, Mathematics 028a/b, Statistical Sciences 024a/b; Biology 022 or 023; or permission of the department. It is strongly recommended that Biochemistry 280a and Biology 282b be taken prior to Physiology 312. Open only to students who are registered in years 3 or 4.

Physiology 313y, Physiology Laboratory
Description: A series of laboratory exercises, brief tutorials and student presentations involving nerves and muscles; neural, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and endocrine systems.
Antirequisite(s): The former Physiology 310.
Prerequisite(s): Physics 020, 024, 028a/b and 029b, or the former Physics 022 or 025; 1.0 course from Calculus 050a/b, 051a/b, 081a/b, 091a/b, Linear Algebra 040a/b, Mathematics 028a/b, 030, Statistical Sciences 024a/b, Applied Mathematics 026; Biology 022 or 023; or permission of the department. It is strongly recommended that Biochemistry 280a and Biology 282b be taken prior to Physiology 313y. A minimum average of 70% in the previous year is required.
Corequisite(s): Physiology 312.
Enrolment limited.

Physiology 314a, Cellular Physiology
Description: A survey of principles of cellular physiology including membrane, ion channel, receptor, and transport protein function, and signal transduction mechanisms.
Prerequisite(s): Physics 020, 024, 028a/b, and 029a/b, or the former Physics 022 or 025; 1.0 course from Mathematics 030, Calculus 050a/b, 051a/b, 081a/b, Linear Algebra 040a/b, Mathematics 028a/b, Statistical Sciences 024a/b; Biology 022 or Biology 023; or permission of the Department. It is strongly recommended that Biochemistry 280a and Biology 282b be taken in second year. Open only to students who have completed two years of university study.

Physiology 464a/b, Organogenesis in Mammals
Description: Mechanisms underlying the development of selected organs and organ systems in mammals: brain and peripheral nervous system, heart and vascular system, lungs, kidneys, gonads and associated reproductive structures, gastrointestinal tract, and limbs. Emphasis is on the biochemical and morphological maturation pathway that equips each system for its physiological role.

Description: The hypothalamus and limbic system contribute to the neural integration of autonomic, endocrine and skeletomotor responses which contribute to homeostasis and adaptive behaviors. Description: Mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level by which function of neurons and their communication to target cells is regulated. Topics may include mechanisms involved in cell fate determination in the nervous system, specification of neuronal phenotype, neurochemical transmission, receptor signal transduction mechanisms, and receptor-ligand biology.

Physiology 470a/b, Fetal Physiology
Description: Blastocyst implantation, establishment of the placenta and the development and regulation of fetal cardiovascular, respiratory, CNS and endocrine functions. The control of fetal growth, metabolism, water balance and the role of the fetus in parturition are described. The interaction between basic and applied physiology is stressed.

Physiology 471a/b, Physiology of the Senses
Description: This course covers the physiology of the senses in the primate, including touch, taste, pain, smell, vision, motion and hearing. Each sensory modality is used to exemplify a particular aspect of sensory processing from stimulus encoding at the periphery to the feature extraction in the sensory cerebral cortex.

Physiology 480E, Seminar and Research Project
Description: A major laboratory project in Physiology which emphasizes experimental design, instrumentation, collection and analysis of data and communication of experimental results by oral, poster and written presentations.
Prerequisite(s): Physiology 312 and 313y (or the former Physiology 310); Physiology 314a.
Minimum 10 laboratory hours per week plus 2 seminar hours alternate weeks, 1.5 course.
Enrolment limited to students in Honors Physiology Programs or Honors Specialization modules in Physiology, Physiology and Pharmacology, and Physiology and Psychology.
