The combined LLB/MBA program is administered on behalf of the Richard Ivey School of Business and the Faculty of Law by the two Program Directors, one of whom is appointed by the Business School and the other by the Faculty of Law. This combined program is designed for students who envision a career in those areas where business and law interact. The program allows students to complete both the LLB and MBA degrees in four academic years instead of the normal five years required if the LLB and MBA degrees are taken separately.

Applicants to the combined program must apply separately for admission to the LLB and the MBA programs by the deadlines established for the Faculty of Law (November 1) and the Richard Ivey School of Business (April 1). A joint committee decides whether applicants who are admitted to both programs and who have indicated that they wish to be considered for the combined program will be admitted to it. An applicant may seek admission to the combined program either when applying for admission to the two individual programs or during the first year of the LLB program. However, as enrolment is limited, students who apply to enter the program after completion of the first year of the LLB program have no assurance that they will be admitted to the combined program.

Students are registered in the combined LLB/MBA program for all four years. Upon completion of the combined program, students will receive both an LLB and an MBA. Below is a brief outline of the program by year. The specifics may change as courses change in each faculty.

The first two years of the combined program consist of the regular first-year LLB and MBA programs, taken as separate entities. Students enrol in Law in the first year, and in Business in the second year.

The third and fourth years of the program are devoted to required and elective courses in both the Faculty of Law and the Richard Ivey School of Business.

During these years, each student must take courses in the Richard Ivey School of Business totalling at least 15 credit hours (five Ivey half-course equivalents). These courses must include all MBA2 required courses, the Ivey Client Field Project/New Venture Project, and three MBA2 elective courses.

The student must also take courses in the Faculty of Law totalling at least thirty-nine credit hours. These courses must include the compulsory core curriculum courses, and a course requiring a written essay worth at least two credit hours.

Beyond the requirements set out above, the student is free to choose four additional half courses in the second year MBA curriculum, or further courses in the LLB curriculum totalling at least eight credit hours, or any combination thereof. Students’ choices of elective courses are subject to the approval of the Program Directors who must review proposed elective course selections to ensure that the objectives of the program are met. The elective courses may not include introductory courses of a dual law and business nature such as Law and Accounting or Business Law.

Students enrolled in the combined program may be eligible for MBA or Law exchanges in Year Four. Students must satisfy both Program Directors that their course load is appropriately balanced before permission will be given to participate in an exchange program.

Students in the combined program must meet the following progression standards:

Students must meet the regular progression requirements LLB and the MBA programs. They must stand in the top half of their respective classes in the first two years of the combined program. They must obtain a minimum weighted average of B on the LLB courses and 75% on the MBA courses they take in each of the last two years of the combined program.

A student who fails to meet the progression standards in any year must withdraw from the combined program. However, a student who has met the progression standards of either the LLB or MBA program will be allowed to proceed to the next year of that program. If the progression standards for both individual programs have been satisfied, the student may continue in either program and may petition the Faculty or School whose program was not selected for permission to complete that program at a later date. A student who is required to withdraw from the combined program and wishes to pursue either or both of the individual programs, must complete all the degree requirements of the individual program or programs in order to graduate from that program or those programs.

Students are considered for the Dean's Honor List at the Faculty of Law during their first year of Law and at the Richard Ivey School of Business during their first year of the MBA courses.

In the third and fourth years of the combined program, students who take Law courses totalling at least 12 credit hours in any year are considered for the Dean's Honor List at the Faculty of Law on the basis of those courses.

In the fourth year, students also are considered for the Dean's Honor List at the Business on the basis of the MBA courses taken during the third and fourth years of the combined program. Only grades obtained in 600-level Business courses will be used in calculating averages for determining Dean's Honor List standing. Courses taken on exchange and courses taken outside the Richard Ivey School of Business are excluded.
