APPLICANTS FROM COLLEGES OF APPLIED ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY (CAAT)
Applicants who have completed a two or three-year program at a College of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT) with a cumulative average of C+ (2.3 g.p.a.) or better, or have a "C+" average in the last two semesters of a two or three-year CAAT program, may be considered for admission to Year 1 of an appropriate program, except that applicants who have achieved a cumulative average of "B-" (2.5 g.p.a.) or better in the first year of a general Arts and Science program at the CAAT level may be considered for admission to Year 1. Applicants who have completed a three-year CAAT program with a cumulative average of "B" (2.7 g.p.a.), or have a "B" average or better in the last two semesters of a three-year CAAT program will be considered for admission and for advanced standing to a maximum of 5.0 courses in Arts, Science and Social Science or the first year of a professional program. Where academic content is equivalent to that of a three-year diploma or upon consultation with the appropriate faculty, applicants presenting a two-year diploma from a College of Applied Arts and Technology with a minimum average of "B" (2.7 g.p.a.) may be considered for advanced standing up to a maximum of 5.0 courses. - Where necessary, the grades for CAATs whose marking schemes differ from that of this University shall be translated into the equivalent grades of The University of Western Ontario and admissibility assessed in those terms.
- Applicants who have completed a three-year CAAT diploma program in either Environmental Technology or Science Laboratory Technology (Fanshawe College), with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, will be considered for admission into either three- or four-year degrees, taking specific modules in Environmental Science which may be combined with specific modules in Chemistry, and for transfer credit to a maximum of 9.0 courses. - On the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and in consultation with the
relevant department(s), the Office of the Registrar may grant advanced standing in Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Computer Science, or complementary studies, to students admitted to the undergraduate Engineering program who have attained a cumulative average of “A” (3.5 g.p.a.) or higher from a completed three-year technology program. Courses in Engineering Science and Engineering Design taught at a CAAT will not be considered for transfer credit toward the BESc degree. - Normally only those applicants who have completed a three-year technology program will be considered for admission to Engineering. Notwithstanding, students who applied to Engineering from other college programs are required to have the equivalent of OAC prerequisites for the Engineering Program, otherwise upgrading will be required.
- For Admission following exemption from Year I of a CAAT program following Ontario Grade 12 or its equivalent:
- With a Two-Year Diploma:
Applicants who have been exempted from Year I of a CAAT program following Ontario Grade 12 or its equivalent, and who present proof of completion of a two-year diploma, are eligible for admission if they obtain an overall average of "B" (2.7 g.p.a.) or better. Note: It is understood that applicants who do not satisfy this guideline will be denied admission UNLESS eligible under Mature Applicants guidelines. - With a Three-Year Diploma Program:
Applicants who have been exempted from Year I of a CAAT program following Ontario Grade 12 or equivalent, and who present proof of completion of a three-year diploma, are eligible for advanced standing under Senate regulations for CAAT students.
- Exceptional cases will be considered by the dean.
*For the implementation and interpretation of point 3, it should be noted that the responsibility accorded to the Dean of Engineering to recommend advanced standing in the undergraduate program of his or her Faculty does not preempt the authority of any department (of another faculty) to determine specific course equivalencies or prerequisites for its own course offerings.
Liberal Studies Major at Fanshawe
Applicants completing either first year or second year of the Liberal Studies Major within the General Arts and Science program at Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology will be admitted to: (a) first year, if they receive up to 2.5 transfer credits at Western for courses completed in the Liberal Studies Major;
(b) second year, if they receive 3.0 or more transfer credits at Western for courses completed in the Liberal Studies Major.
Those eligible for first-year admission must have completed a minimum of 10 courses in the Liberal Studies Major and have achieved a minimum overall 3.5 GPA with no grade less than "C". Those eligible for second-year admission must have achieved a minimum overall 3.0 GPA in the Liberal Studies program with no grade less than "C". The following courses are excluded in the calculation of the overall GPA: courses entitled General Education, qualifying courses, introductory language courses and personal skills courses. Courses completed during the diploma program which are not part of the Liberal Studies Major, and courses completed after the completion of the diploma program, will not be counted in the overall cumulative GPA. Applicants will receive transfer credit provided that they achieve a minimum grade of "C" in each of the following 7000-level courses considered for transfer credit: English, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Women’s Studies, and History of Western Art.
