| Description: Radical social movements have always challenged the established media order and opened new channels to circulate marginalized ideas. Media and the Public Interest 390F/G, Getting the Message Out: Activism and Mainstream Media | |
| Description: Activists often consider corporate or state owned media unfriendly terrain. But such media can provide a crucial way to ‘get the message out.’ Using the ideas of experienced media activists, and examples from the practice of today’s social movements, this course investigates how to win the battle for public opinion in mainstream media. | Antirequisite(s): MIT 387F/G. | Prerequisite(s): Registration in the third or fourth year of a module in

| Description: This course examines the definition, history, theory and practice of “alternative” media, and its differences from and relationship to “mainstream” corporate and state supported media. Media and the Public Interest 398F/G, Internship | |
| Description: The Internship program places undergraduate students in internship positions for a semester equivalent. A faculty member will supervise these non-paid credit positions, which are meant to aid students in making connections between academic study and the off-campus world (in a location distant from Western) through work with community groups, non-government organizations, and public service organizations with media-related or information-related interests. Placements will be determined by instructors in consultation with the Undergraduate Affairs Committee. | Prerequisite(s): Students must be registered full-time in the MPI undergraduate module offered by the Faculty of Information and Media Studies and must have completed their second year with a minimum cumulative average of 72% and no failures. Students must also be in good standing in their program, with no academic offences and be eligible to travel in the country of the placement. | 0.5 course | back to top |

| Description: This course combines work in the field of public interest media, participation in a special seminar and theoretically informed paper or project based on the practicum experience. | Prerequisite(s): Limited to students in the fourth year of a Major or Honors Specialization in Media and the Public Interest. | The course will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis with the option of a pass with distinction. | A maximum of 15 hours of class time and a minimum of forty hours placement, 0.5 course. | back to top |
