Students registering in first year general programs must choose courses that fulfil the basic requirement of five courses numbered 001-099. Students are encouraged to take an essay course in first year. At least one course from each of two of the faculties of Arts, Science and Social Science must be included (certain alternatives are approved, as indicated in course listing above). Note: Any student transferring from one of the three Honors Visual Arts programs or Visual Arts program, into any other degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Health Sciences, Information and Media Studies, Science or Social Science must complete the normal first year requirements. A student may not register for a full program of senior courses until the five courses of first year have been completed satisfactorily. Students are responsible for choosing courses that fulfil the prerequisites for a senior program. Specific prerequisites are included in the individual course descriptions listed in the UNDERGRADUATE COURSE INFORMATION section. If in doubt, students should seek appropriate counselling and consult directly with the Department(s) concerned. Prospective first year students should seek help in choosing courses from First year Academic Counselling. Part-time students who have completed one first year course are eligible to register in senior courses for which they have completed the prerequisites. However, these students must successfully complete the five full-course equivalents of the first year program within their first ten attempts. Part-time students who have a substantial background and interest in a particular subject area are, on written recommendation of the Dean of their Faculty, eligible to register in a senior course pertinent to that subject prior to the completion of a first year course.
