LANGUAGE SKILLS

English is the language of instruction in most courses. Students whose command of English is inadequate are asked to seek advice from the Dean's Office about remedial instruction in English.

Because of the bilingual nature of Canadian society as well as for cultural and academic reasons, it is important that social science students have some command of French. Which courses are most appropriate to achieve this objective will depend upon the student's background and should be worked out in consultation with the Department of French.

Some graduate programs at this and other universities require a degree of competence in at least one language other than English, and some require proficiency in two. Students who may wish eventually to enter a graduate program should prepare themselves to meet such language requirements in their undergraduate work.
