Admission and Progression Requirements

Note: The honors program in Psychology has limited enrolment. In cases where the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spaces, entry into the program will be competitive; students who meet the minimum requirements may be refused admission.

Students may enter the honors program after first, second, or third year if they meet the following admission requirements. To enter the honors program after first year, students must have a minimum overall average of 70% in their first year courses with no mark less than 60% in any course. To enter or remain in the honors program in each of the subsequent years, students must satisfy the following requirements:

principal courses: an overall overage of at least 70% with no mark less than 60

subsidiary courses: an overall average of at least 60% with no mark less than 50%

principal and subsidiary courses combined: an overall average of 73%

(Students who were admitted into the Honors programs prior to September 2002 will be governed by the procedures in effect at the time the students were admitted to the programs.)

First Year

Completion of five full-course equivalents including:
Psychology 022E (other introductory psychology courses may be substituted with the permission of the Department)
One of Philosophy 020E, 021, or 022E is very strongly recommended
Mathematics 012a/b or 017a/b in combination with Mathematics 028a/b; or Mathematics 030 or 031 or the former Mathematics 027 or the former Applied Mathematics 020, or 023a/b plus 024a/b
Two additional full-course equivalents numbered 001-099

Note: All courses taken to complete first year requirements are considered as principal courses.

Second and Third Years

Principal Courses
Psychology 283a, 381F/G, 208E
Two of:
Psychology 241E, 275E, 227E
One and one-half additional 300- or 400-level honors courses or half- course from the Department of Psychology
Philosophy 200F/G and Philosophy 201F/G if Philosophy 020E has not been completed
Philosophy 210F/G and Philosophy 211F/G if Philosophy 022E has not been completed
Philosophy 212
Philosophy 332E or 352E
Enough additional Honors Philosophy courses to bring the total in second and third year to four, including at least two at the 300- or 400-level
Subsidiary Courses
Enough additional senior courses to bring the total number of courses in second and third year to ten

Fourth Year

Principal Courses
Psychology 495E
Psychology 385F/G [if not taken in Third Year]
Additional Honors Philosophy courses as needed to bring the total to six, with at least three of these at the 300- or 400-level
Subsidiary Courses
Two additional full-course equivalents including enough Honors Psychology courses to bring the total number of Honors Psychology courses to seven
