PROGRAMS OF STUDY

The Faculty of Science offers modules which lead to the following degrees:

Honors Bachelor of Science (Four-Year) 20.0 required courses.
Honors Bachelor of Arts (Four-Year) 20.0 required courses.
Bachelor of Science (Four-Year) 20.0 required courses.
Bachelor of Arts (Four-Year) 20.0 required courses.
Bachelor of Science (Three-Year) 15.0 required courses.
Bachelor of Arts (Three-Year) 15.0 required courses.

The Faculty of Science and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry jointly offer the following Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMSc) degrees:
Honors Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Four-Year) 20.0 required courses.
Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Four-Year) 20.0 required courses.
Students who are interested in the BMSc program should register in the Medical Sciences First Entry Program in the Faculty of Science in Year 1.  Following successful completion of Medical Sciences 1 and 2, students may apply for entry into the BMSc program in Year 3. Admission to Year 3 of the BMSc program is assured for students in Medical Sciences 2 provided:
  • a full load of 5.0 courses is successfully completed in Year 2,
  • an average of at least 80% is achieved on 3.0 of the 2000-level courses required in the module for which registration is requested,
  • a mark of at least 60% is achieved in each modular course, and
  • no modular courses have been repeated
See MEDICAL SCIENCES FIRST ENTRY PROGRAM and ADMISSION TO BMSc PROGRAM

The following degrees are not necessarily offered in the modular format.

A Five-Year BMSc Honors and Combined HBA Degree Program is available in:
Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences
A Five-Year BSc and Combined HBA Degree Program is available in:
Honors BSc (or Honors BA)/HBA
A Six-Year BSc Honors and Concurrent JD Degree Program is available in:
Honors Computer Science/JD
BSc (FN) Honors Specialization in Nutrition and Dietetics, Honors Specialization and Specialization in Foods and Nutrition, and Honors Specialization in Food Science and Technology are offered jointly by the University and Brescia University College. For details see the Brescia University College section.

All the regular undergraduate degrees offered either by the Faculty of Science or jointly between the Faculty of Science and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, whether Three-Year or Four-Year, contain a "breadth requirement" and an "essay requirement".

Breadth Requirement:

Students must include at least 1.0 course from each of Categories A, B and C within their degree. (2.0 of these courses will be taken in Year 1).

Note: For further information, please see Breadth Requirements, in the Academic Information section.

Essay Requirement:

A student must include at least 2.0 courses with an essay designation (suffix E for a full course, suffix F, G, or Z for half courses - F/G indicates an essay designated half course which might be offered in either term). Essay courses must be completed at Western or at one of its affiliated University Colleges.

At least 1.0 of these 2.0 essay courses must be at the senior level, numbered 2000 or above.

Note: A number of courses offered by Science and Basic Medical Science departments have essay designations.

Note:  Few students in Science have experienced the full range of scientific disciplines when they start University. For this reason, students are most strongly encouraged to take a science elective; that is, at least 0.5 course offered by the Faculty of Science, that is not required for your program of study. Students are reminded that several programs have limited and competitive enrollment. A broad selection of courses in Science will serve you very well if you should need or decide to take an alternate path in your academic career.

No more than 14.0 courses in one subject may be counted among the 20.0 successfully completed courses used to fulfill graduation requirements.

All Bachelor of Science degrees, whether Four-Year (Including Honors) or Three-Year, require that a minimum number of Science courses be included in the degree.

Honors Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Four-Year) degrees require a minimum of 11.0 courses from the Faculty of Science* within the 20.0 courses required for the degree.  Honors Bachelor of Medical Sciences and Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Four-Year) degrees require a minimum of 11.0 courses from the Faculty of Science* within the 20.0 courses required for the degree.

Bachelor of Science (Three-Year) degrees require a minimum of 8.0 courses from the Faculty of Science* within the 15.0 courses required for the degree.

* Note: Courses offered by the Departments of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, History of Medicine, Medical Biophysics, Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology, and Physiology and Pharmacology, including courses in Neuroscience, will be accepted in place of Science courses in the above degrees.

Honors Bachelor Degree:

This degree must contain either an Honors Specialization module or two Major modules (Double Major).
  • An Honors Specialization module may be combined with a Major or a Minor module, or options.
Bachelor Degree (Four-Year):

This degree must contain either a Specialization module or a Major module.
  • A Specialization module may be combined with a Major module, or a Minor module, or options.
  • A Major module may be combined with another Major module, or one or two Minor modules, or options.

Bachelor Degree (Three-Year):

This degree must contain either a Major module or two Minor modules.
  • A Major module may be combined with a Minor module, or options.
The Honors Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMSc) degree (limited enrollment):

This degree must contain one of the following Honors Specialization modules: Biochemistry, Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Biochemistry of Infection and Immunity, Chemical Biology, Clinical Biochemistry, Computational Biochemistry, Medical Biophysics (Medical Science Concentration), Medical Biophysics (Clinical Physics Concentration), Medical Cell Biology, Medical Sciences, Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology and Toxicology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Physiology and Pharmacology.

OR

two of the following Major modules: Biochemistry, Medical Biophysics, Medical Cell Biology, Medical Sciences, Microbiology and Immunology, Pharmacology, Physiology.

The Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Four-Year) degree (limited enrollment):

This degree must contain one of the following Specialization modules: Biochemistry, Medical Biophysics, Medical Sciences, Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology and Toxicology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Physiology and Pharmacology.

OR

two of the following Major modules: Biochemistry, Medical Biophysics, Medical Cell Biology, Medical Sciences, Microbiology and Immunology, Pharmacology, Physiology.

Note: There is no Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Three-Year) degree. Students wishing to complete a 3-year degree containing a Major or Minor module offered by the Basic Medical Science departments must select a degree with a different designation, e.g. 3-year BSc with a Major in Medical Sciences.

General regulations for these degrees are in the ACADEMIC INFORMATION section.

Specific course requirements are described in the appropriate departmental entries.

Except in those cases where it is stated in the module description, most modules in the Faculty of Science do not normally have limited enrollments. However, should a case arise in which the number of applicants for a particular module exceeds the number of available spaces, entry into that module would be competitive, and students who meet the usual minimum requirements might be refused admission.
