JD (UWO)/LLM (Auckland) COMBINED PROGRAM

Admission to the JD (UWO)/LLM (Auckland) Combined Program in the Faculty of Law is pending program approval at the University of Auckland. Please see the online Academic Calendar for updates.

This Combined Degree Program will permit The University of Western Ontario (UWO) students to earn a JD from UWO and an LLM from the University of Auckland (Auckland) by attending Auckland for an exchange term and one or two additional terms in the LLM program. Similarly, Auckland LLB students will be able to complement their New Zealand Law Degree by earning a UWO LLM by attending UWO for an exchange term and two additional terms.

JD/LLM Program for UWO Law Students
Begin at Western Law for JD (3-year degree) and then to Auckland for LLM (1-year degree).

Exchange term at

Auckland, enroll in courses of 50-60 points of Law, or at least 60 points if one or more is a 700-level law course. Students who wish to take two 30-point 700-level law courses are eligible for the PGCertLaw. Students enrolled in one or more 700-level law courses must also enroll in Law 788 Legal Research Methodology at this time.

Western JD degree complete - eligible for October convocation

LLM Tuition paid to Auckland. Enroll in Law 788 (if not already completed) and four 700-level LLM courses (4 x 30 points = 120 points)

Notes:

  1. Auckland will allow Western students during their exchange term to enroll in 700-level LLM courses under the current exchange agreement (subject to approval). These may count towards the PGCertLaw which may be awarded after successful completion of 60 points of 700-level courses and Law 788 Legal Research Methodology.
  2. The Western students will be in the top half of their class and have completed an Individual Research course with a grade of B+ or higher prior to the exchange term.
  3. The fee for Year 4 will be the usual Auckland international course fees for 700-level courses. Some students may be eligible for scholarship assistance.
  4. The 700-level courses chosen may include intensive courses offered in Year 4, and also one 30-point equivalent 700-level course of study at Western. This course of study must be approved by the Associate Dean (International) at Auckland in consultation with Western.
  5. Western students may be able to return home in the second half of Year 4 to complete the 30-point equivalent 700-level course at Western, and the 30-point Dissertation if chosen as one of the LLM courses, provided supervision is approved.
  6. Eligible students must complete their Year 4 700-level courses taken towards the LLM within one year of full-time study or up to four years of part-time study from the date of first enrollment in the LLM.
  7. Students who elect not to complete the final 60 points of the LLM may instead credit Law 788 and the 120 points of 700-level papers taken in Year 3 and the first half of Year 4 towards the MLS, provided they have not already had the PGCertLaw awarded to them.

LLB/LLM Program for Auckland Law Students

Notes:

  1. Students will be admitted into the LLM level at the beginning of Year 5, contingent upon successful attainment of the full admission requirements by the end of the exchange term.
  2. The Auckland students will be in the top half of their class.
  3. Auckland will accept the Western LLM courses for its LLB degree requirements.
  4. LLM fees to be assessed for Year 5 – two terms LLM tuition at international rate.
  5. LLM funding available to a students in this Combined Degree Program if they meet the criteria.

Once admitted into the Combined Degree Program, students will be required to meet the academic progression requirements of the school they are attending. Similarly, students will have to comply with
the student code of conduct and academic integrity requirements of that school.

UWO students admitted to the Combined Degree Program will remain eligible under the normal UWO rules for the Dean’s Honor List and to graduate with distinction.

Administration
Each institution will appoint a faculty member to serve as the Coordinator of the Combined Degree Program. The Coordinators will be responsible for admission decisions and the on-going operation of the Combined Degree Program. The Coordinators will attempt to maintain reciprocity in the number of incoming and outgoing students at the two schools.

Tuition (provisional and provided for information only)
Auckland students in the first term of the LLB/LLM at UWO will, like other exchange students, pay regular tuition to Auckland. In their second and third LLM terms, they will pay tuition to UWO at the same level as its other international students. UWO students during their exchange term at Auckland will, like other exchange students, pay regular UWO tuition to UWO. During Year 4 of the program, they will pay foreign graduate school tuition to Auckland.
