SOCIOLOGY

Overlapping Courses Between Sociology Modules

Sociology 205a/b, 206a/b and 240E or 270a/b and 271a/b are required courses for most of the majors and specializations offered by the Department of Sociology at Brescia. When students combine two majors (e.g., Major in Sociology and Major in the Sociology of Law, Crime and Deviance) or a specialization and a major (e.g., Honors Specialization in Sociology and Major in the Sociology of Law, Crime and Deviance), however, these courses only need to be taken once. Sociology 205a/b and 206a/b will be counted toward both modules. Sociology 240E or 270a/b and 271a/b will count toward one module and an additional 1.0 course at the 200-level in Sociology must be taken for the other module. When a major module in sociology is being combined with the Community Development module offered by the Brescia Sociology Department (which does not require that Sociology 205a/b and 206a/b be taken), any 1.0 sociology course numbered 200 or above may be doubled counted.

Statistics Substitution

The Department will allow students to substitute certain statistics courses (see list below) taken from other departments for Sociology 205a/b. To fulfill requirements for a major or specialization, however, students will still need to take Sociology 206a/b and an additional half-year course in Sociology at the 200-level to make up for the lack of 205a/b.

Common equivalent courses for Sociology 205a/b include: Management and Organizational Studies 242a/b, Psychology 281, 282E, Statistics 135, 137a/b, Biology 244a/b, Health Sciences 282 (or the former 201), Social Work 205.

This means that students taking two majors in Sociology have 11.0 required courses while those combining a specialization and a major have 14.0.

Please note that this is the only overlap between a Minor and another module offered in Sociology.
