PRESERVICE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS

The Faculty of Education offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Education (BEd) and the Diploma in Education (DipEd Technological Studies). The Preservice program covers two semesters, each requiring nine weeks of course work in the Faculty. In addition, a further ten weeks of practice teaching are scheduled during the first and second semesters and a two week transition to professional practice component course at the end of the second semester. While orientation begins in the last week of August, courses begin in the first week of September and conclude at the end of April.

The basic program requirement for a student enrolled in any Initial Teacher Education program is 6 credits; 4 of which represent the in-Faculty course component and 2 of which represent the Practicum. One credit in the course component is normally equivalent to 72 hours of class time plus additional out-of-class work. The practicum consists of up to 10 weekly days, 10 weeks of block practice teaching and a two week transition to professional practice component.
