American Studies 020, An Introduction to American Studies
Description: This course introduces students to the interdisciplinary study of the history, culture, and politics of the United States. It stresses how the national idea of America has evolved, and how artists, labourers, immigrants, Indigenous peoples, and others, have grappled with the conflicting definition of what it means to be "American."

Description: This course explores the theory and method of American Studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary examinations of U.S. culture, including institutional and cultural traces of Anglo-European colonialism, the effect of their contact with Indigenous and African peoples, immigration, racism, nationalism, war, individualism, communitarianism, religion, government, rights, popular culture, and the arts.
Prerequisite(s): At least 60% in ONE of: American Studies 020, History 027E, Political Science 020E, English 020E, 022E, 024E, or permission of the Director of the Centre for American Studies.

Description: This course examines the major works and interpretive methods of American Studies, exploring in theoretical and empirical detail the ideas of "identity," through the art, literature, politics, economics, media and history of the United States.
