COMBINED HONORS BMSc (HONORS SPECIALIZATION IN MEDICAL SCIENCES) / BA (HONORS BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION)

The Ivey Business School, The Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, and the Faculty of Science administer these combined degrees.

Structure of the Combined Degree

The completion of these combined degrees takes 5 academic years. In year 1, students normally enroll in the First Entry Biological and Medical Sciences program in the Faculty of Science and take the courses required for entry into Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences. In year 2 students take the courses as listed below. Students must meet the progression requirements for an Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences. In Years 1 and 2 students are normally registered in the Faculty of Science. In Year 3, students are enrolled in the first year of the HBA. For Years 4 and 5, students are registered in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and the Ivey School of Business. Students are registered in the combined Honors BMSc (Honors Specialization Medical Sciences)/HBA for Years 4 and 5. Below is a brief outline of the course requirements for these combined degrees by year. The specifics may change as courses change in each faculty. It is recommended that students do not take more than 2 years of course work prior to beginning the first year of the HBA; however, it is possible to undertake this program with more than 10.0 credits prior to entry into the first year of the HBA. For students in this latter category, the completion of the combined degrees may take more than 5 years and thus students should contact both the Medical Sciences counsellor and the academic counsellor in the Ivey Business School.

Admission Requirements

Students apply for the combined degrees during the first year of the HBA. To be eligible for admission, students must complete a minimum of 10.0 courses including the admission requirements as specified in the 2007 Academic Calendar for entry into the Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences, as well as the following courses: Business Administration 257; Biochemistry 280a; 1.0 course from Chemistry 213a/b, and either Chemistry 223b or a 0.5 course in Chemistry at the 200-level, or Chemistry 273a and 283G, or the former Chemistry 253; Biology 281b; Biology 282b; Biology 290F/G; 0.5 course from either Biology 244a/b or Statistical Sciences 222a/b; and 0.5 course from any Faculty*. Students must attain a minimum two-year average of 80% (10.0 credits), a minimum mark of 70% in Business Administration 257, a minimum mark of 60% in any option course, and satisfy the minimum progression requirements for the Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences. Demonstrated participation in extra curricular and/or community activities, leadership, and work experience are also admission criteria for the HBA. In addition, students must attain a minimum weighted rounded average of 78% in the first year of the HBA. For students who have completed more than 10.0 credits prior to registration in HBA1, a minimum overall average of 80% is required in the 10.0 courses taken in Years 2 and 3, with no mark less than 60% and a minimum mark of 70% in Business Administration 257. Applications for the combined degrees must be made on-line to the HBA program by the published deadlines for Ivey. The Ivey School's Academic Excellence Opportunity (AEO) students are also eligible to apply to the combined degrees. Entrance to the combined degrees is competitive and limited.

Second Year

1.0 course: Business Administration 257
0.5 course: Biochemistry 280a
1.0 course from: Chemistry 213a/b, and either Chemistry 223b or a 0.5 course in Chemistry at the 200-level; or Chemistry 273a and 283G; or the former Chemistry 253

0.5 course from: Biology 244a/b or Statistical Sciences 222a/b
0.5 course from any Faculty*

All students, including those admitted via the AEO route, must have completed all the admission requirements to the module as well as all the modular courses listed above and Business Administration 257, prior to acceptance into the first year of the HBA (Students in AEO must also complete an essay course prior to registration in the first year of the HBA program).

Year 3

All students must take the first year of the HBA program in Year 3.
7.25 courses: Business Administration 300, 301, 302y, 303, 304, 305q, 307, 308a, 316.

Year 4 and 5 - Combined Degrees

Students take an approved combination of required and elective courses from both faculties in these years:

Year 4

*These 3.0 courses must be chosen from 2 or 3 of the Basic Medical Science Disciplines: Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Medical Biophysics, Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, or Physiology. Because 400-level courses (see Year 5 below), offered by the Basic Medical Sciences Departments require certain prerequisites, students must consult with the Basic Medical Sciences counsellor prior to selecting courses for Year 4.

1.0 course: Business Administration 430
0.25 course: Business Administration 415q
0.5 course: Business Administration 428a
0.5 course: Business Administration 466a

Year 5

*These 2.0 courses must be chosen from 2 or 3 of the Basic Medical Science Disciplines, as listed after year 4.

0.5 course: Medical Sciences 490F/G
2.0 courses: at the 400 level from the Business School
0.5 course from any Faculty*

*Note: A student must satisfy the breadth requirement of a BMSc degree. See the "Graduation Requirements for Honors Bachelor degrees" in the Academic Information section. The requirement of at least 2.0 courses with an essay designation is satisfied by Biology 290F/G and Medical Sciences 490F/G and 1.0 other essay designated course.

Degree Requirements

Students registered in the combined degrees are expected to abide by all guidelines associated with each of the individual degrees.

Progression Standards

Students in these combined degrees must meet the following progression standards:

Students enrolled in first year HBA (Year 3) must attain a minimum weighted rounded average of 78%. In Years 4 and 5 students must attain a minimum weighted average of 75% in their 400-level HBA courses and a minimum cumulative modular average of 70% with no mark less than 60% in courses required for the Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences.

Failure to Meet Progression Standards

A student who fails to meet the progression standards in any year must withdraw from the combined degrees. With permission from the appropriate HBA Program Director and/or the Associate Dean, Basic Medical Sciences Undergraduate Education (BMSUE), Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, the student may continue in one degree, and request permission from the other School to complete the other degree at a later date.

A student who fails to meet the progression standards in any year of the combined degrees may appeal the decision in writing to either the HBA Program Director or the Associate Dean, Basic Medical Sciences Undergraduate Education (BMSUE), Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, depending upon the degree in which the progression standards were not met, in accordance with the University's policies on Academic Rights and Responsibilities.

Dean's Honor List

Students are considered for the Dean's Honor List in the Faculty of Science in Year 1 and 2, and at the Business School during their first year of HBA (Year 3).

Students enrolled in Year 4 and 5 of the combined degrees are considered for the Deans Honor List at the Business School in Year 5 only. Only grades obtained in 400-level Business courses will be used in calculating averages for determining Dean's Honor List standing. Courses taken outside the Business School are excluded. The Dean's Honor List for HBA2 (Year 5) typically includes the top 10% of the class and is determined by vote of the teaching faculty. Those who stand on the Dean's Honor List over all 300- and 4-level courses taken at the Business School at the completion of the combined program will graduate as Ivey Scholars. Students who take courses required for the Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences module totaling at least six half courses in Year 4 and five half courses in Year 5 of the combined degrees are considered for the Dean's Honor List in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry in each of those years on the basis of those courses.

Fees

When enrolled in the Combined Honors BMSc (Medical Sciences)/HBA degrees, students pay the prevailing fees as determined by the University policy on combined degrees.

Exchange Programs

Effective May 2006, academic exchange opportunities are not available for the combined degrees, because of the combination of core and elective courses required in Years 4 and 5.
