FIVE-YEAR BSc HONORS MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES AND BACHELOR IN EDUCATION

Concurrent Degree Program

This program is designed to prepare students to teach at the intermediate-senior level (grades 7-12) only. Entry into this program begins after completion of first year, and may be limited. The program may be cancelled in a given year if enrolment targets are not met. Students who wish to transfer into this program after completion of second year of a different program must consult with the Chair of the Preservice Program in the Faculty of Education and a representative for the program from the Faculty of Science. See the website for this program to find the name of the current representative.

Students wishing to enrol in this program must choose sufficient courses in a second subject which would qualify as their "second teachable" subject. The minimum number of such courses is usually three; to find out exactly how many courses are necessary in that subject, please contact the Admissions Coordinator in the Pre-Service Office in the Faculty of Education or consult the website of the Faculty of Education.


Admission Requirements

    A complete first year program, with an average of at least 70%, in which three courses must be designated as principal courses, including Calculus 050a/b, Calculus 051a/b (or Calculus 081a/b with a minimum mark of 85%), Linear Algebra 040a/b, and Statistical Sciences 023a/b. At least a half course in a second teachable subject is required; a full course in a second teachable subject is strongly recommended.

    (NOTE: Either Physics or Computer Science is recommended as an appropriate second teachable subject). Computer Science 025a/b or 026a/b, plus 027a/b are strongly recommended.

    One course from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities or the Faculty of Social Science is also required. (English 020E or Sociology 020 is recommended.)

    NOTE: A minimum of three full course equivalents in a second teachable subject must be completed before the beginning of fourth year.

The following must be completed during the second and third years and will be considered Principal Courses in the year in which they are taken:

Calculus 250a/b and 251a/b (to be taken in second year)
Statistical Sciences 257a (to be taken in second year)
One of Applied Mathematics 213b or Mathematics 200a/b or the former Mathematics 203b (recommended to be taken in second year)
Differential Equations 215a
Applied Mathematics 261b
One of Applied Mathematics 301a/b (Complex Analysis) or Mathematics 307a/b (Complex Analysis I)
1.0 course in the Second Teachable subject
Statistical Sciences 260b and one of Statistical Sciences 357a or 325a/b
1.0 course in Mathematics Sciences chosen from Sets 1and 2, listed below*
Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Mathematics 30 (full course to be taken in third year)

The following must be completed during the second and third years and will be considered Subsidiary Courses in the year in which they are taken:

2.0 courses in the Second Teachable subject
1.0 senior essay course (Education 200E is strongly recommended)
0.5 course option
Two Practica: Education Practicum 401b and Education Practicum 402b, each consisting of at least thirteen days (non-credit, prerequisites for Education Practicum 403b [formerly Mathematics Education 101y] in Fifth Year)



Fourth Year

4.0 courses equivalents from the Faculty of Education, which include Teaching and Learning Theory of the Second Teachable subject, Foundations of Education, Educating Exceptional Children, and additional electives.

NOTE: Students intending to teach in Roman Catholic schools should include the Religious Education elective

Education Practicum 403b, which is a formal discussion of the activities and events of Education Practicum 401b, Education Practicum 402b, and Transition to Professional Practice, including analysis of teaching experiences and critical reflection on the work of teachers in schools. (0.5 credit)

Education Practicum 404b, which is a third practicum experience in which prospective mathematics teachers are placed in secondary school classrooms for a four month period and assume major teaching responsibilities. Students work under the guidance of an experienced mathematics teacher, and a teacher experienced in another subject area relevant to each student's program. (2.0 credits)

* All nine of the unspecified half courses in the mathematical sciences required in the third, fourth, and fifth years of this program must be chosen from Sets 1 and 2, listed below. At least two must be chosen from each of the Sets 1 and 2.

NOTE: Prerequisites for these courses are not necessarily met through the prescribed program courses. Students must plan ahead in selecting the appropriate prerequisites for the courses they wish to take from these Sets.
