The Student Development Centre (SDC) provides professionally trained counsellors and other specialists to assist students with career, personal, learning and social concerns. SDC offers workshops and presentations, on-line help, drop-in centres, individual counselling, and self-help materials. Services are available to all registered full- and part-time students. Career Services (661-3559)

Programs to assist you with all stages of career development and job search. Individual counselling and workshops to help you to:

  • establish a sense of direction and identify skills developed in academic programs
  • plan and implement an effective job search before graduation

We also provide:

  • on-line job postings available for current students (summer & part-time positions), new graduates and alumni
  • daily Job Search Clinic available on a drop-in basis
  • All-Campus Career Fair
  • Internship Program providing real world work experience prior to graduation
  • career interest testing on-line to help you narrow down your options
  • self-serve Resource Library including information on various educational programs, international opportunities, volunteer positions, job search strategies and career paths
  • interview preparation workshops and practice interview sessions
  • faculty-based career programs to provide you with information specific to your field of study

Effective Writing Program (661-3031)

This program offers free writing instruction and information about writing for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff.

  • ESL specialist available
  • On-Line Writing Lab (see www.sdc.uwo.ca) with access to a wide range of on-line writing instruction
  • courses in writing in cooperation with the Centre for Continuing Studies
  • regular, free group writing workshops in the EWP Writing Centre on a host of different topics
  • evening drop-in hours at Weldon Library

First Nations Services

First Nations Services is pleased to offer a variety of cultural counselling, services, and programs to First Nation, Metis, and Inuit students in an encouraging and supportive environment. We would also like to invite all members of the university community to make use of the 1,100 plus book and resource material collection on First Nations topics located in the Student Development Centre.


International Student Services

International Student Services functions year round, offering programs, information and individual assistance with issues covering a broad range of student questions and concerns.

  • Individual assistance with immigration regulations, financial, cultural, career (Canadian work regulations and job search process) and personal issues
  • Reception and Orientation Service

  • Peer Guide Program for all new students

Learning Skills Services

Strengthen skills for multiple-choice and essay tests, complete an assessment inventory, get help with science/math problem solving, or learn about key learning strategies.

Indvidual Counselling for all students - strengthen skills or reinforce success. One-on-one appointments with a learning skills counsellor to discuss strategies to excel in courses.

Learning Skills Presentations Topics include Managing Your Time, Learning from Textbooks, Effective Memory Strategies, Preparing for and Writing Multiple-choice Tests.

Online Services:

Self-help Books SDC’s Resource Library has a wide selection of learning skills books on topics such as Reading Skills, Public Speaking, and Time Management.

Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) - Phone 661-2147 TDD: 661-2147

Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) assists students in adjusting to the university environment. Students who use the services provided by SSD have conditions that interfere with their ability to do their course work or to move freely among locations on campus. These disabilities include chronic illnesses, chronic pain, attention deficit disorders, learning disabilities, psychiatric disorders, and visual, hearing, and mobility impairments. Enrolled students and individuals contemplating attending Western may meet with a counsellor in SSD to discuss possible arrangements that the University can make in order to accommodate their disabilities. SSD also offers Adaptive Computing Technology Centre located in UCC, Room 215, and the Learning Opportunities Lab located in the Weldon Library.

Provides students with career-directed volunteer positions with UWO faculty and staff. Students can choose opportunities from a broad range of faculties and career fields.


SDC's Volunteers In Progress (VIP) Program

SDC's Volunteers In Progress (VIP) Program is a student volunteer program designed to complement your academic life by providing an opportunity to develop skills, gain career-related work experience, explore career interests and development, establish contacts, work with diverse professionals in SDC, and make new friends. Each year over 100 students participate in SDC's VIP Program. Volunteers can be involved in a variety of experiences research, administration, program management, public relations and reception, marketing and promotions, group facilitation, teaching, resource development, and committee work.
