CEE 202a/b, Mechanics of Materials
Description: Concept of stress and strain; axially loaded members; second moment of area; elastic torsion of circular shafts; bending and shearing stresses in beams; transformation of stress and strain; stresses in thin-walled pressure vessels; design of beams and introduction to beam deflection.

CEE 217a/b, Introduction to Environmental Engineering
Description: A course introducing the application of chemistry and engineering principles to an understanding of environmental issues associated with human activity. Topics include mass and energy transfer, environmental chemistry, water and air pollution, pollutant transport modeling, pollution management, and risk assessment.

CEE 218a/b, Civil Engineering Systems
Description: Use of systems approach in civil engineering analysis and design. Course topics include: systems thinking; simulation; optimization; and multi-objective analysis. Exposure to, and use of computer-based simulation and optimization tools in solving civil engineering problems.

Description: A first course in Structural Theory and Design, including a consolidation of material concerning static equilibrium. Free body diagrams; behaviour, analysis and design of trusses and statically determinate beams; Euler buckling; force effect envelopes.

CEE 221a/b, Structural Theory and Design II
Description: A consolidation of the analysis and design of statically determinate structures, and an introduction to the analysis of indeterminate structures. Analysis and design of statically determinate beams and frames; bending of unsymmetric sections; virtual work and energy methods, introduction to indeterminate structural analysis.

CEE 224, Engineering Fluid Mechanics
Description: Basic concepts of fluid mechanics: fluid statics; continuity, momentum and energy equations; vortex flow; flow of real fluids and boundary layers; dimensional analysis. These principles are applied to pipe and open channel flows: steady pipe flows, uniform and gradually-varied flow in open channels; sluice gates, weirs and hydraulic jumps, unsteady flows.

CEE 324a/b, Surveying
Description: The fundamental theory and procedures of plane surveying with application to engineering construction. This course runs in the summer for a period of 10 days. (Usually two weeks preceding the start of term). Limited enrolment. Preference will be given to students who have completed term 4 of the Civil Engineering program. (26 lecture hours, 26 laboratory hours).

The last date for adding the course is the start of classes on the third day, and the last date for dropping the course is the end of classes on the fourth day. Enrolment limited.

CEE 326, Soil Mechanics and Hydrogeologic Engineering
Description: Soil classification, clay mineralogy, effective stress principle, site investigation practice. One and two dimensional steady state flow in natural and engineered systems. One dimensional settlement and consolidation theories for clayey soils, shear strength models, assessment of short term slope stability.

CEE 340a/b, Structural Theory III
Description: A continuation of CEE 221a/b. Methods of analysis of structures having a high degree of statistical indeterminacy such as frames, continuous beams and arches. Matrix formulation of the displacement methods and computer oriented analysis. Influence lines for indeterminate structures.

CEE 342a/b, Natural Loads and Their Effects
Description: Natural loads and their effect on civil engineering structures are examined and discussed in the context of the National Building Code of Canada. Included are the effects of wind on buildings and structures, an introduction to seismic loads, snow loads on roofs, etc.

CEE 346a/b, Steel Design
Description: Behaviour and Limit States Design of tension members, columns, beams, beam-columns, and connections. P-delta analyses for unbraced frames. Building systems. Current professional issues in steel construction. Health and safety issues are discussed.

Description: Introduction to reinforced concrete design including serviceability and strength limit states. CEE 384a/b, Finite Element Procedures
Description: Linear finite element analysis including equilibrium through the principle of virtual work, two dimensional plane stress and plane strain elements, two dimensional elements for steady state field problems, assembly of stiffness matrices and the imposition of boundary conditions, isoparametric formulation, natural coordinates and numerical integration, numerical solution of equilibrium equations.

CEE 440, Civil Engineering Thesis
Description: Selection and investigation of an engineering problem. Analytical and/or experimental work is carried out by individual students, supervised by a faculty member. Progress reports and a final engineering report are prepared; each student must deliver a public lecture. Students considering future graduate studies are strongly encouraged to take this course.

CEE 441, Civil Engineering Design Project
Description: Students undertake a comprehensive engineering design project which involves the creative, interactive process of designing a structure/system to meet a specific need subject to economic, health, safety, and environmental constraints. Each student is required to write an engineering report and deliver a public lecture.

CEE 458a/b, Risk Analysis and Decision Making in Engineering
Description: Engineering systems are analyzed using probability theory and statistics to evaluate system performance under uncertainty. Risk based methods are used to make decisions under uncertainty.

CEE 461a/b, Natural Disasters: Mitigation, Modeling and Assessment
Description: This course is an examination of natural disasters and their effects on the society and consists of three modules. The first module (4 weeks) focuses on basic probabilistic modeling and simulation techniques and their applications to natural disaster problems. The second module (4 weeks) will examine hurricane models and events. The third module (4 weeks) focuses on earthquake events.
Antirequisite(s): CEE 428b, if taken in 2004-2005.

Description: Consideration of properties of solid waste, landfill covers, landfill gas, leachate, techniques for disposal, regulations, liner technology, contaminant transport, and impact assessment are examined in the context of the design of solid waste disposal facilities.

CEE 476a/b, Environmental Hydraulics Design
Description: The application of hydraulic engineering principles in the analysis of environmental flows. Topics include: Stratified flows, turbulent jets and plumes, wastewater and thermal diffusers, cooling ponds and cooling channels and the control of environmental problems such as zebra mussels and ice.

CEE 490, Dynamics of Structures
Description: Students are introduced to concepts of structural dynamics and the response of civil engineering structures to time-varying loads, including those due to wind and earthquakes. Topics include: the effects of the mass and damping; random dynamic loads; the design of dynamically sensitive buildings, towers, chimneys and long span bridges.
