Description: This course examines the fundamental aspects of the structure, physiology, genetics, and phylogenetic relationships of the Bacteria and Archaea. Examples of medically and environmentally important organisms are presented.

Microbiology and Immunology 221a/b, The Biology of Infection and Immunity
Description: The biology of selected pathogens and the diseases they cause. An examination of host/parasite relationships and strategies used by microbes to survive in their hosts. Aspects of clinical disease will be studied including diagnosis and treatment based on modern molecular techniques and the nature of host immune responses.
Antirequisite(s): The former Biology 221a/b.
Prerequisite(s): Biology 022, or Biology 023, or permission of the instructor.

Note: Priority is given to students in Years 2 and 3. Please check course offerings and technical restrictions.
First Term: This half course is delivered entirely via the Internet. Students must have access to the Internet on a multimedia-equipped Pentium-class computer. Enrolment in this term is restricted to 25 students.
Second Term: Access to course materials on the World Wide Web is provided and required in this half course.

Description: Elementary concepts of immunity, structure and function of the immune system, antigens and antibodies, complement, genetic basis of the immune response, humoral and cellular immunity, immunological tolerance, organ and tissue transplantation, allergy and autoimmunity.

Microbiology and Immunology 360b, Diversity of Prokaryotes and Viruses
Description: A study of selected groups of Bacteria and Archaea that exhibit metabolic and physiological diversity (heterotrophs, phototrophs, autotrophs, chemolithotrophs, extremophiles). Molecular systematics and identification of prokaryotes. Introduction to the structure and replication of bacterial and animal viruses (including HIV and SARS). Viral responses to host cell defenses.
Antirequisite(s): The former Microbiology and Immunology 450b.
Prerequisite(s): Biochemistry 280a (formerly Biology 280a), Biology 281b, Microbiology and Immunology 220a. Biochemistry 381a is recommended.

Description: Selected topics in prokaryotic diversity, focussing on bacterial habitats, physiology, associations, life cycles, and their influence on the environment. Current phylogenetic concepts will be discussed.

Description: An advanced course examining the application of classical genetics and modern molecular biological approaches to the analysis of gene expression in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Topics will include transcriptional control mechanisms, regulation of simple developmental systems, and gene mutation, mapping, and manipulation.

Description: This course covers advanced concepts in organization and regulation of the immune system. Includes structure and function of immunoglobulins and other immune cell receptors, B and T lymphocyte interactions and signal transduction, cellular regulation by cytokines, immunological effector mechanisms, and diseases of the immune system.

Description: The major laboratory course for students in Honors Microbiology and Immunology. The course consists of lectures on laboratory safety, biosafety, use of animals in research, scientific integrity; an independent research project (topic and advisor chosen by consultation between student and faculty); scientific communication (two seminars and a written report).
Antirequisite(s): Biochemistry 483E, Biochemistry 484, Microbiology and Immunology 484.
Prerequisite(s): Enrolment limited to students in Year 4 of Honors Microbiology and Immunology Program or Honors Specialization Microbiology and Immunology.

Description: A major fourth year course for students in Honors Microbiology and Immunology. The course consists of lectures on laboratory safety, biosafety, use of animals in research, scientific integrity; a common laboratory session where students will be introduced to modern molecular biological techniques; and a major literature research paper including oral and written presentations.
