BACHELOR OF ARTS (MUSIC) and BACHELOR OF ARTS (HONORS MUSIC)

These programs are intended to give a general background in music without a professional orientation. Both programs offer more flexibility than Bachelor of Music programs, including the possibility of electing 50% of the courses from areas other than Music.


Admission Requirements

Six approved OAC credits, including OAC1 English, one of which may be OAC Music or equivalent Conservatory certificates (Grade IX vocal or instrumental with Grade III Theory). Completion of six Grade 12 U and/or M level courses including ENG4U.

Recommendation of the Faculty on the basis of an interview. The Faculty contacts each applicant regarding specific requirements and dates. Conservatory certificates are not required.


First Year

* Students who cannot demonstrate competence in theory rudiments, melody writing and elementary harmony will be required to acquire such competence, by taking Music 001a or through independent study, prior to enroling in Music 049a/b . Students who can demonstrate an advanced level of competence in harmony may be granted prerequisite standing for Music 049a/b and may enrol in Music 050a/b.


Second Year
Third Year

    Two full-courses or equivalent numbered 200 or above from Music Theory and Composition or Music History
    One full-course or equivalent from Music
    Two full-courses or equivalent from a Faculty other than Music
    Ensemble (one or more of Music 328, 345, 351, 354, 356, 358, 368, 378, 379, 386) -- optional, by audition

Music 024 and senior courses offered by the Departments of Music Performance Studies and Music Education may not be elected but may be transferred to the BA programs if completed while the student is registered in a BMus or BMusA program.


Fourth Year (Honors Program only)

    Two full-courses or equivalent numbered 200 or above from the Music Theory and Composition or Music History
    One full-course or equivalent from Music
    Two full-courses or equivalent from a Faculty other than Music
    Ensemble (one or more of Music 428, 445, 451, 454, 456, 458, 468, 478, 479, 486) -- optional, by audition
