NEW ACADEMIC CHOICES

The University of Western Ontario is committed to ensuring that the Undergraduate experience at Western is a rich and challenging one. We want to ensure that all our students have an opportunity to expand intellectually through exposure to a variety of academic disciplines. New Academic Choices is a new modular degree structure that will give you the opportunity to combine various subjects with even greater flexibility than ever before! In many cases, you will be able to broaden your area(s) of study by combining modules from different Faculties and/or Departments, or you can focus on a specific subject in greater depth.


WHAT

New Academic Choices is a new modular degree structure being implemented by The University of Western Ontario in September 2004 to give Western undergraduate students increased flexibility in their academic pursuits. The modular structure of the New Academic Choices will provide the opportunity for students to broaden their area(s) of study by combining modules from different Faculties and/or Departments or enhance their studies by focusing intensively on a specific discipline.


WHEN

The New Academic Choices will be implemented in September 2004.


WHY

WHO

New Academic Choices affects undergraduate students who are entering Western and/or will be enroled in second or third year as of September 1, 2004 in the following Faculties and Affiliated Colleges:

Faculty of Arts
Faculty of Health Science (School of Kinesiology, and Bachelor of Health Sciences)
Faculty of Information and Media Studies
Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (Bachelor of Medical Sciences)
Don Wright Faculty of Music (Bachelor of Arts)
Faculty of Science
Faculty of Social Science
Brescia University College
Huron University College
King's College

If you are a FIRST YEAR student in 2004 - Students entering Western in September 2004 will register in the New Academic Choices.

If you are a SECOND or THIRD YEAR in 2004 - You can choose to register in either the New Academic Choices or the "old" curriculum. Students who choose the "old" curriculum must graduate no later than the Autumn 2008 Convocation.


HOW

The Common First Year
(Students entering their first year in September 2004)

You will take 5.0 introductory courses and gain a broad knowledge of a variety of disciplines. By the end of this year you will be able to make an informed decision about choosing your module(s) based on your academic strengths and interests.
