Admission Requirements

Applicants to the concurrent program must apply to the Faculty of Law at the beginning of their first year in Honors Political Science and in advance of the application deadline established by the Faculty. To be considered for admission to the concurrent program, students must: (i) have completed first-year University with an overall minimum average of 80% and obtained at least 80% in Politics 020E; (ii) have completed second year (first-year Honors Political Science) with an overall minimum average of 80% and obtained a minimum of 80% in Political Science 230E; (iii) meet the minimum LSAT requirements established by the Faculty of Law; and (iv) be admitted to the Faculty of Law. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee a position in the concurrent program. Entrance into the concurrent program is competitive and limited.

Progression Requirements

Once admitted to the concurrent program, students must meet the regular progression requirements of the Department of Political Science and the Faculty of Law. They must also stand in the top half of their Law I class. Further, in each of their fourth, fifth, and sixth years they must obtain a minimum B average in their LLB courses and a minimum 75% average on the courses they take under the auspices of the Political Science Department.

A student who fails to meet these progression requirements is required to withdraw from the concurrent program. However, if the student has met the progression requirements of either the Honors Political Science or Law program, he or she will be allowed to proceed to the next year of that program. If the progression standards for both individual programs have been satisfied, the student may continue in either program and may petition the Department or Faculty whose program was not selected for permission to complete that program at a later date. A student who is required to withdraw from the concurrent program and wishes to pursue either or both of the individual programs, must complete all the degree requirements of the individual program or programs in order to graduate from that/those program(s).

Program

In the first year of the program students are registered in one of the Faculty of Arts, Science, or Social Science. In the second year they are registered in the Faculty of Social Science. In the third, fourth, fifth and sixth years students are registered in the concurrent program and take a combination of approved Political Science and Law courses.

Upon completion of the concurrent program, students will receive both a BA in Honors Political Science and an LLB.

First Year

First-year program in Arts, Science, or Social Science, including Politics 020E (Introduction to Politics)

Second Year

Political Science 230E, 237E, and 231E or 245E

Two full or equivalent course options (not to include 100-level courses)

Third Year (First Year of Concurrent Program)

First-year Law curriculum. No non-law courses may be taken during this year.

Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Years

Political Science courses:
Five Honors Political Science full or equivalent courses, at least two of which must be at the 300-level or above (may include Politics 231E or 245E, if not already taken).
Three full or equivalent course options (not to include 100-level courses).

Law courses:
Four of the core curriculum courses in the fourth year. The remaining two core curriculum courses in the fifth year.
Law electives equalling at least 24 credit weights. One of these courses must have an essay requirement of at least two credit weights.

Dean's Honor List

Students in the concurrent program are considered for the Dean's Honor List in the Faculty in which they are registered in the first year of the concurrent program, and in the Faculty of Social Science in the second year. In the third year they are considered for the Dean's Honor List in the Faculty of Law. A student who takes Law courses totalling at least 12 credit hours in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth years of the program, is considered for the Dean's Honor List in the Faculty of Law in each of those years on the basis of those courses. A student is also considered for the Dean's Honor List in the Faculty of Social Science on the basis of courses taken in each of those years in that Faculty.

Graduation with Distinction

Eligibility to graduate with distinction for each degree is determined by each Faculty.

Gold Medal

Students in the concurrent program are eligible to be considered for the Gold Medal in either or both degree programs, along with other eligible graduating students in those programs, as determined by the requirements in each Faculty.
