Course Description

English 233E Medieval to Jacobean Drama, 1300-1642 (excluding Shakespeare)

A study of about twenty-five plays by Shakespeare's predecessors and his famous contemporaries -- Jonson, Marlowe, Webster, etc. The dramatic traditions and genres are traced, and the plays are studied in their social and theatrical contexts. The course aims to enhance an understanding of Shakespeare by illuminating his context.

Antirequisites: English 262F/G, and 263F/G.
Prerequisites: At least 60% in English 020E, 022E, 024E or the former 026, and at least 60% in all subsequent English courses, or permission of the Department.
