Course Description

Philosophy 137E Social and Political Philosophy

Controversial issues in social and political thought are explored, with attention to the views of important political philosophers from Plato to Marx, along with contemporary writers. Sample topics: social justice, the individual and state authority, concepts of democracy. Independent critical thinking about these matters is stressed.

Antirequisites: Philosophy 235F/G, 236F/G and the former 237E, Political Science 147E and 237E.
