Course Description

Health Sciences 315E Advanced Health Informatics

Building on the concepts presented in Health Sciences 208F/G, students will look at topics related to data collection, analysis & storage in more depth. In particular, students will look at the complexities of the coding and classification of medical data. The course will include a laboratory component covering spreadsheets and databases and practice with various coding systems. Also we will discuss issues related to freedom of information, privacy, confidentiality and security of information, and legal issues in dealing with health information.

Prerequisite: Health Sciences 208a/b; Pathology 240a (the latter can be taken concurrently).
2 lecture hours, 1 tutorial hour, half course
