Course Description

Earth Sciences 413a/b Physico-Chemical Processes of the Upper Mantle and Crust

Physics and chemistry of mantle and crustal sources for igneous and metamorphic rocks, partitioning, graphical representation of equilibria at high pressures and temperature. Geothermometry-geobarometry, relationship of major and trace element distribution. Role of fluids/melts and volatiles in igneous and metamorphic rocks, mass balance, mixing, assimilation processes.

Prerequisites: Earth Sciences 312a and 314b, or the former Earth Sciences 311, and Earth Sciences 330b, or permission of the Department.
2 lecture hours, 3 laboratory hours, half course.
