Course Description

International and Comparative Studies 014a/b Basic Chinese

An introduction to oral and written Mandarin for students with no previous knowledge of the language. Focus is first given to building a solid phonetic foundation by using the Pinyin system. Students will also learn approximately 150 characters and basic grammar. The course prepares students for progression to International and Comparative Studies 015a/b. Available only to students with no prior background in any Chinese dialect or written Chinese.

Antirequisites: OAC Mandarin, International and Comparative Studies 007, or the former Modern Eastern Civilizations 007, 014a/b.
