History 204E History of Culture and Values in East Asia

An investigation into the Chinese and Japanese cultural traditions and their historical relationship, focusing on the core works of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Shinto, as well as Chinese and Japanese historical literature, and the relevance of these traditions for understanding modern East Asia.

Antirequisite: History 293E: History of Cultural Influences between China and Japan, if taken in 1993-94, 1994-95, or 1995-96.
