Course Description

Mathematics 302a Group Theory

An introduction to the theory of groups, including basic properties, examples, direct sum and direct product, subgroups, symmetric group, group actions and orbits, cosets, Lagrange's theorem, homomorphisms, normal subgroups, quotient groups, isomorphism theorems, Sylow theorems.

Prerequisite: A mimimum grade of "C" in Mathematics 203b or Applied Mathematics 213b.
3 lecture hours, half course.
